THANKS A $22 BILLLION MR TREASURER!

12 May 2009

$8.5 billion to build roads, railways and ports as the cornerstone of Australia’s path to recovery was warmly welcomed by the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF).

” Building roads and rail which can get freight moving and our goods in and out of our ports is good for the economy and will give us a big pay off in productivity in the future “ Mr Phillip Marsh the National President of the CCF said.

“However, we need these projects to commence as soon as possible rather than being tied up in studies. In many cases our members just don’t know when work is going to start and that is impacting on their ability to keep people in jobs. We are also concerned where projects rely on funding from other parties whether this funding will be available” Mr Marsh said

Civil constructors play a particularly important role in project development as they are usually the first on site for earthworks and other site preparation. Real progress with specific information and time frames is crucial if the money is to flow quickly into the economy.

“Governments need to cooperate to get work to tender very quickly and there must be a process to ensure this happens. Progress in projects under $30 milllion which support small to medium business is particularly important.” Mr Marsh said.

Overall, getting the work moving fast will help to restore business confidence more generally as our members spend with local suppliers and traders.

CCF would also like to see dedicated money being made available for maintenance of our aging infrastructure and not just new construction. This is a looming issue for the community and now is an excellent time to make such repairs.

The Civil Contractors Federation is also disappointed that the First Home Owners Boost Grant is to be phased out over 6 months.

“ The grant has been really key in keeping work going in the subdivision market and keeping people in employment so we are disappointed it is being phased out. We would like to see it continued through the course of the recession.” Mr Marsh also said.
