Civil Skills and the Resources Sector
The National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce has released its Discussion Paper in relation to addressing the workforce needs of major resources projects over the next 5 years and beyond.
The Taskforce is chaired by the Hon Gary Gray AO MP the Parliamentary Secretary for Western and Northern Australia. Members who attended last year’s conference will recollect that Mr Gray delivered a key note address and spent some time with us listening to our concerns.
Accordingly, we are very pleased that the Discussion Paper is also asking about the impact of the needs of the resources sector for skills on sectors like ours.
In our media release welcoming the Discussion Paper we pointed out that mining and civil often draw their skilled labor from the same employment pool and that it is critical that resources not be supported to the detriment of the civil sector.
The paper also asks some important questions about training and we will be making sure that your views are put forward. Some members will also be participating in a survey about skills as part of the Discussion Paper process.
Submissions are due by 9 April 2010. The Discussion Paper is available at www.deewr.gov.au/nrset.
