Overview of Occupation:


A foreman supervises a crew of workers on a civil construction project site and co-ordinates their work.

Foremen are responsible for making sure that the work assigned to the crew is completed safely, on time and in accordance with specifications.

Range of tasks performed in the occupation:

Tasks may include:

  • Arrangement of plant, labour and material resources for the project
  • Direction of sub-foremen, leading hands, plant operators and labourers
  • Direction and monitoring of sub-contractors, suppliers and plant hirers
  • Daily monitoring of activity costs
  • Maintaining daily record of site activities
  • Implementing and maintaining the project quality, OH&S and environmental plans
Personal Requirements:

To be successful in this occupation you should:
  • Be able to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Have good leadership skills including being able to motivate and lead by example
  • Be able to analyse and solve problems
  • Have an eye for detail
Education and Training:

Usually you will have completed a traineeship or apprenticeship in civil construction and undertaken some post-trade study. You will have a solid knowledge of all phases of civil construction as well as considerable ‘on the ground’ experience.

The formal qualification on completion of a traineeship/apprenticeship is Certificate III in Civil Construction and the formal post-trade qualification for this type of work is Certificate IV in Civil Construction. Both are nationally recognized qualifications.

Employment Opportunities:

If you show initiative as a Foreman and have the drive to succeed, you could be in line for promotion into a more senior supervisory or management position, or you could go on to run your own civil contracting business.
